Sport: Samoa sevens expecting improvements at breakdown

The Samoa sevens coach Viliamu Punivalu is expecting a more disciplined performance from his team at this weekend's Tokyo leg of the World Series.

Samoa were on the receiving end of multiple penalties at the breakdown in the Las Vegas and Wellington tournaments, as the players struggled to adapt to referee interpretations.

Viliamu Punivalu has been in regular contact with referees boss Paddy O'Brien but says he doesn't expect those issues to continue.

"We've been working hard on the ruck area. We've been getting a lot of unecessary penalties and trying to train that area in the high intensity and elite level. Also not just from the refereeing but also from the mindset from the players - understanding of hands in the ruck (and) when the ruck is formed as you're supposed to remove your hands".

Viliamu Punivalu says his biggest challenge this weekend will be getting the team to gel with seven new faces from the squad that competed in Wellington.
