More than 4,000 new voters have registered in Tonga for the country's second general election to be held in November.

Radio Tonga reports registration for candidates will begin in October.

Tonga's Supervisor of Elections Pita Vuki says a programme to raise awareness and prepare people for elections is being considered.

He was speaking as electoral administrators gathered in Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa from around the region to discuss electoral issues around the Pacific.

Mr Vuki told Radio Tonga on the agenda of the meeting of the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand Electoral Administrators Network, is Australia's assistance towards Pacific island countries and its election processes.

There will also be discussion on an exchange programme for the region's election officials.
