Papua New Guinea's Minister for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Richard Maru, says the government is supporting small and medium enterprises in Chimbu by allocating more than US$1m to them.

Mr Maru had been speaking to members of the Simbu Indigenous Business Council in Port Moresby.

The National newspaper says the funding will go towards the construction of a new office for the National Development Bank's branch in the province.

Mr Maru added the government intends to develop a savings culture among locals and the establishment of micro-bank branches is a key strategy they are implementing to develop a savings culture.
