The supervisor of elections in Tonga says there are 48,000 voters included on the provisional roll, which is an increase of six thousand people since the last general election in 2010.

Peter Vuki says this represents 83 per cent of the population based on 2011 census figures.

He says people have until the 22nd of September to get their names on the electoral roll.

"Everybody's aware this is an election year. We are still starting with the first part trying to get them to register as voters and we'll continue from there. In 2010 we had 42,000. So far we have close to six thousand added to the role."

Peter Vuki says registration of candidates will be on October 23rd and 24th and Tonga's general election will be held on November 27th this year.
