The director of a travelling film festival in Papua New Guinea hopes the films will ignite a discussion about human rights.

The country's Human Rights Film Festival is in its fifth year and screens about thirty films around the country over four days.

Alithia Barampataz says past screenings of films on sorcery related violence, housing, and climate change have been followed by panel discussions which often spark heated debates.

"It allows people a safe distance to have those discussions and then we can really get down to the issues at hand and really have a new perspective on how we can address these issues in PNG."

Alithia Barampataz says PNG filmmakers need increased support and she hopes more films from locals will be submitted this year.

Submissions are open until August 15th.
