Sport: Fiji sevens team suffer shock defeats at Youth Olympics

The Fiji sevens team struggled on day two of the Youth Olympics in China, suffering shock defeats to both France and Argentina.

The Fijians had topped the table after the opening day, but lost to France 17-12 before going down to Argentina 21-0, opening the door for the South Americans to top the standings.

Argentina and France have secured the first two semi-final places although Fiji and Japan are in pole position to claim the remaining berths.

Elsewhere in Nanjing, Guam was beaten 22-7 by Belgium in their opening women's basketball clash.

Tuvalu and Vanuatu were both beaten in straight sets in the second round women's beach volleyball matches.

Vanuatu's Under 15 footballers were thrashed 9-0 by Korea meanwhile the Fiji girl's hockey team conceded 17 unanswered goals against the Netherlands.

Fijian weightlifter Ulina Sagone finished seventh in the girl's 53kg class, with compatriot Poama Qaqa

eighth in the boy's 62kg class, Papua New Guinea's Igo Lohia 10th and Marcellus Taman 11th.
