Fiji's Prime Minister has told delegates to a credit union gathering in Fiji their institutions must meet the highest standards of probity and accountability.
Frank Bainimarama was making the keynote address at the Pacific Credit Union Technical Congress.

"He says his government will have zero tolerance for any institution that fails to meet these standards. Mr Bainimarama says Pacific islanders crave honesty in their dealings with others and want integrity from both their elected representatives and those running public and private institutions. The Prime Minister was Finance Minister during much of the period of the previous military led regime. Just released Auditor General's reports covering that period point to serious failures in terms of accountability and transparency including around the payment of ministers' salaries. This week the opposition sought an explanation on why these were handled by a private accountancy firm. The opposition leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, says the government must front up to the people and explain how their money has been spent."
