Fiji government promises to pay Qarase pension

2:22 pm on 5 December 2014

Fiji's Finance Minister has told Parliament that a former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase will be paid his pension, although he won't say when that would be.

Mr Qarase, who was ousted by Frank Bainimarama's military coup in 2006, says the Prime Minister's office wrote to him a year ago, saying he would receive all his entiltements including his prime ministerial pension.

However, he says he has never received it.

In a statement, the opposition says the government has refused to explain why the pension has not been paid for eight years, saying the government's victimisation of Mr Qarase is immoral.

In 2010, the regime reinstated pensions to those who had criticised the interim regime but Mr Qarase was not included.
