10:17 am on 29 January 2015

The Fiji Football Association says it will help pay for the funeral costs of Under 17 international Shalit Muni Reddy.

Shalit drowned on Tuesday while swimming in Savaii on a team excursion.

He was in Samoa with the Fiji team who had just finished competing at the Oceania Under 17 Championship.

The Chief Executive of the Fiji Football Association, Bob Kumar, says they were shocked to hear of Shalit's death and are assisting his family in any way they can.

"We did notify the family yesterday before making any announcement. When we got the confirmation our officers went down to his residence in Nadi and explained the situation to the family. Tonight (Wednesday) our other officers are going there to see the family and offer their assistance financially for the funeral etc".

Bob Kumar says Oceania Football and Football Federation Samoa are also helping with arrangements, while the rest of the Fiji team is due to fly home on Friday.
