The leader of a sex trafficking organisation is to spend almost 20 years behind bars after being sentenced in the Northern Mariana Islands.

A Chinese national, Wei Lin, lured women from China to Saipan with promises of work but then forced them into prostitution.

In 2012 (June) Mr Lin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and to benefit financially from a sex trafficking venture.

The US District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands has sentenced him to 19-and-a-half years in prison.

The Chief Judge, Romana Manglona, says there was clear evidence Mr Lin was the leader of the sex trafficking organisation and ordered he pay over seven-thousand dollars compensation to each of his three victims.
