A select committee is taking public submissions this week on the National Flag Protection Bill, which sets out rules and punishments for use and misuse of the new flag, which is to be chosen before October the 10th.

Section 16 of the bill includes fines of up to $9,500 US dollars and jail terms up to 10 years for desecrating the new flag.

The Fiji Times reports the deputy secretary in the Prime Minister's Office, Peniana Lalabalavu, presented a submission to retain the exact colour of the Fiji flag.

She says the Office of the Prime Minister is fully supportive of the National Flag Protection Bill, which is an historic opportunity that will instil in the mind-sets of the people of Fiji the value of the flag.
