Japan and Samoa have signed a deal to provide $US30 million dollars to fund a major wharf re-construction in Apia.

Samoa's Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, and Japan's Ambassador in Apia, Kazumasa Shibuta, signed an arrangement to improve the capacity of the wharf.

Mr Shibuta says the project will have a positive impact on economic development by improving Samoa's international transport links.

97 percent of Samoa's trade goes through the Apia port.

The re-construction is also expected to improve safety.
