The MV Suilven began listing as it arrived in the harbour from the Northern Division yesterday and it sank within an hour.

The 27 crew members and four passengers on board were rescued according to reports.

Fiji VIllage reports an Emergency Operations Centre has been activated at the Fiji Navy to support the efforts of Fiji Ports Corporation.

Oil spill equipment is on standby ready for deployment.

A government vessel is also on standby to help with the removal of any floating cargo from the sunken ship.

The country's Maritime Safety Authority will conduct an investigation into the sinking.
