Free medical clinics in American Samoa get huge numbers

7:06 pm on 7 December 2017

There have been large crowds of American Samoans taking advantage of free medical clinics provided by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

A team of 25 doctors, nurses and support staff from the mainland are conducting the Adventists Medical Evangelism Network, or AMEN, clinics.

The services being offered are eye, dental and general medicine.

The executive director of the Amen Clinics, Ben Trinh, says a number of the hundreds of mostly elderly coming to the clinics have diabetic conditions.

"I did anticipate that there were going to be quite a bit of diabetic patients but I did not anticipate the high value of their testing, and so that is a concern for me," said Mr Trinh.

"The other thing I have notice is there's quite a bit of high blood pressure patients. What we are seeing right now is that most patients are not on medication or they are not taking their medication before they come here."
