However, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told Fiji Village raising the wage rate to the level suggested by the opposition would cause job losses.

The Sodelpa party is proposing a rate of US$1.98 an hour, while the National Federation Party said the government was instilling unnecessary fear by saying the rate could not be raised.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the wage had been reviewed and increased twice since it was first introduced in 2014.

He said this rate was only for unskilled workers and a building foreman has a minimum rate of $US2.58 per hour, a tradesman earns $US2.13 per hour, while a log truck driver has a minimum rate of $US2.10.
