The east coast of New Caledonia's main island is under red alert because of heavy rain.

The weather service said persistent rain and strong easterly winds would continue for the rest of the day.
In some towns the schools decided to remain closed today.
There has been flooding and some roads have been cut, with authorities preparing emergency accommodation.
Most other parts of New Caledonia have been issued with an orange alert.
