CNMI's longest serving governor dies

Pedro Tenorio, the CNMI's longest serving governor, died yesterday following a long illness.

He was 84 years old.

"Teno" as he was fondly called, held the office for 12 years - from 1982 until 1990, and again from 1998 to 2002.

The current governor, Ralph Torres, has called Mr Tenorio one of the territory's top statesmen.

He said during his terms Mr Tenorio addressed the government's dismal financial condition, reduced the deficit, and then generated surpluses during his third term as governor.

Governor Torres has directed that both CNMI and federal flags to be flown at half-staff until the day of Teno's interment.
