Saipan man jailed for dousing girlfriend with pretrol

The Northern Marianas Superior Court has jailed a 25-year-old man for six years for dousing his girlfriend with petrol and setting fire to their house.

In October last year Teregeyo allegedly attempted to kill his then-girlfriend by dousing her, her clothes, their bed, and their bedroom with petrol and pushing her inside the bedroom to prevent her from fleeing, as he set the room on fire.

The victim told police that she and Teregeyo were having an argument in the bedroom when he went outside the house, brought in a container filled with petrol, and spilled it around the bedroom and on her body.

John Teregeyo pleaded guilty to arson and assault and battery.

He was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment, but under a plea deal got five years of the sentence suspended, with the possibility of parole.
