Several village pulenu'u or village mayors told Newsline Samoa that this is an area village councils can help Police with.

Pulenu'u of Iva village in Savai'i, Seve Luki, said villages should not wait for Police to ask for their support.

"If the village councils can do this, it is an indication of their support for Police over this matter," he said.

Pulenu'u Mautu Fou of Sa'anapu village in Upolu agreed.

"It's a matter that the village councils should have looked into a long time ago," he said.

Samoa Police Service last month launched an amnesty for owners to hand in unlicensed arms and ammunition, the third in as many years.
