Three to five tropical cyclones are likely to pass through Vanuatu during this cyclone season, with two or more reaching category three or higher.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department (VMGD) released its 2023/24 tropical cyclone outlook following its 5th national climate forum in Luganville.

Vanuatu is currently under a state of emergency (SOE) after severe cyclone Lola, which arrived just before the start of the cyclone season.

The Pacific cyclone season runs from early November to the end of April.

As affected communities and authorities take stock of the damage left by Cyclone Lola, they have been urged to remain vigilant, and be weather ready as cyclones can occur outside the cyclone season.

With the current El Niño conditions, Vanuatu is expected to experience drier-than-average conditions in the coming months.
