AT THE MOVIES #779                   WHAT FICTION MEANS

Simon Morris looks at three films that are all, in one way or another, riffs on popular fairy-stories: comic-book villains, a rags-to-riches showbiz biopic, and that Bollywood favourite, the meeting of the rich girl and the poor boy.

Joker is the latest outing of the popular Batman villain – but this time more a gritty character study than an action thriller.  Stars Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro.

Yuli tells the real-life story of Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta, who spent much of his childhood struggling against dance-classes.

And Indian writer-director Ritesh Batra (The lunchbox) returns home to make The photograph, a riff on the Bollywood films he used to watch as a child.
