AT THE MOVIES #924   MIXED BLESSINGS

Simon Morris welcomes this year’s blockbuster season, but can’t help noticing there’s not much competition for this week’s big Disney release.  There’s a small British feelgood movie, and over on Prime, there’s an under-achieving coming of age film.

The Little Mermaid is the latest live-action remake of a Disney animated classic.   Starring Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem and Halle Bailey as Ariel.   Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods)

Bank of Dave is the real-life story of a man who defied the establishment to create the first new British bank in 150 years.   Starring Rory Kinnear (No time to die), Joel Fry (Yesterday) and rock band Def Leppard.

And Armageddon time is the story of a young boy in 1980s New York confronted with some harsh realities behind the American Dream.   Starring Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong (Succession) and Sir Anthony Hopkins, it’s directed by James Gray (Ad Astra).
