12:15 INTERVIEW: Karl Steven - Black Hands 

Aotearoa composer Karl Steven is well known for his soundtrack work across a multitude of projects like The Blue Rose, Bellbird, and more recently Come to Daddy, which earned him APRA Best Original Music in a Feature Film Award. This year, he took on his biggest challenge yet: writing the score for Black Hands, a dramatized TV series focusing on the infamous Bain family murders. 

Steven hangs out with Charlotte Ryan and explains how he made sure the soundtrack was as respectful to the Bain family as possible.

1:00 INTERVIEW: Kate Stables from UK band This Is The Kit

Kate Stables is the UK musician behind This Is the Kit. She was discovered by Guy Garvey from the band Elbow, and has made albums with Aaron Dessner from The National and Aldous Harding producer John Parrish. Her fifth album Off Off On has just been released to great acclaim, so Tony Stamp called her at her home in Paris France, to chat about the new release and her recovery from Covid.

If ever there was a band who could credibly bring a note to class excusing them from making another album it’s ACDC. In the last few years, they’ve had a singer turn deaf, a guitarist locked up in New Zeland for various dirty deeds, and probably most importantly lost their founding guitarist and songwriter Malcolm Young. Despite all of this, the iconic rock band has released their 17th album Power Up. 

Nick Bollinger reviews the new record and decides whether it’s as good as their more iconic previous works on this segment of The Sampler.

Elvis Costello 

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Elvis Costello has been making music since London’s pub rock scene in the early 1970’s. Over his long-lasting career, Costello has recorded 31 studio albums, a considerable number of live albums, and songs for films. He describes his newest album Hey Clockface as “vivid”. 

Nick Bollinger reviews the latest release on this segment of The Sampler and ponders what Costello’s place is in 2020.

2PM LIVE: Lou'ana 

Freespritied songstress Lou’ana has been carving her place in the Auckland music scene for the last six years. She’s performed with a number of different acts including funk/soul band Hipstamatics and Kiwi electronic outfit Sola Rosa.

A second-generation Samoan New Zealander, Lou’ana was raised in a family of music. The radio would always be on, blasting tunes from artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Orbison, Elvis, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix.

Lou’ana’s voice is sweet and soulful, but with a gritty, blues edge that sounds a bit like Etta James, Stevie Nicks, or Amy Winehouse.

Her debut album Moonlight Madness has just been released. We are so lucky to have Lou’ana here performing for us live on Music 101.

Mo Muse is a Somali-born hip-hop artist from Auckland that tells his story through his music.  Mo Muse was brought up in Mt Roskill and fell in love with rapping at university in Otago.

Antonia Prebble is one of New Zealand’s most successful actresses. Starting her career aged just 12, she’s gone on to star in a multitude of iconic kiwi tv shows like Outrageous Fortune, and Westside. Although she’s immediately recognizable in New Zealand, she’s known internationally for her role in Power Rangers: Mystic Force. 

A new mum, Antonia has settled in Auckland with her husband and Westside co-star Dan Musgrove. As an actress, Antonia has spent more time in a makeup chair than most. That leaves a lot of time to listen to great music! 

She joins Charlotte Ryan for an honest conversation about motherhood, what life looks like now that Westside is over, as well as choosing songs that represent pivotal moments in her life.
