12:15 Sir Dobbo on his Christian Faith

This segment is taken from Sir Dave Dobbyn's Mixtape which originally aired Easter Weekend 2021. If you'd like to check out the full production click here.

Sir Dave Dobbyn begins his RNZ Music Mixtape vigorously stirring his hot coffee with a warning. “You may decide at the end of our mixtape that I am indeed stirring.”

“That’s one that you learn on the other side of 60, it’s quite fun asking a question and seeing what happens!”

He’s chosen a special list of songs for Easter and to reflect his Christian faith, and speaks passionately about the teachings of Christ as the “absolute truth” he is committed to.

1:30 The Sampler - Head of Roses by Flock of Dimes

Tony Stamp gets deep into a breakup album from American songwriter Jenn Wasner, AKA Flock of Dimes.

RELATED: The Sampler: Pixie Williams, Voom, Flock of Dimes

The breakup album is nothing new. In fact, at this point, it’s firmly in the realm of cliché. But, a musician tapping into raw emotions like this can still yield incredible results.

3:15  INTERVIEW: OMC How Bizarre turns 25

It has been twenty five years since the release of OMC’s only album How Bizarre. It was of course phenomenally successful, and to celebrate the anniversary it’s been remastered and released on vinyl for the very first time.

OMC was the project of Paulie Fuemana, who died from a neurological disorder in 2010 at the age of 40.

Sina Saipaia sang on two tracks on the album, including ‘How Bizarre’, but the two men most closely involved in making music with Paulie were Simon Grigg, who ran Huh! Records, and Alan Jansson, who produced the album.

These guys have told this story many times, but partly because Tony really enjoys talking to them both, and to celebrate the anniversary, he talked to Simon at his home in Thailand, and Alan at his Auckland studio, and we’re going to play you some extracts of their conversations.

3:30 INTRODUCING: Iris G

Iris G is a 22-year-old RnB singer/songwriter from Avondale, Auckland. She stars in our brand new series The Collective, an eight-part video series following a group of six young musicians as they work towards the biggest performance of their lives.

Iris merges quirky vocals with personal storytelling and hard-hitting synths that draw listeners in and takes them on a journey.

“My music is a mix of old school hip hop, RnB and emotions,” Iris says.

Having grown up around music, Iris has long had a passion for producing her own sound. However, it wasn’t until she entered a school talent quest that she realised it could be her career.

With a proposition from her school principal to write a song or go to detention, Iris has been writing songs ever since.

Her music achievements include winning the Smokefree Rockquest in 2016 for Best Solo Artist, and having her song ‘Attitude’ feature in the 2018 TVNZ docuseries ‘Neighbourhood’.

As a self-described feminist, Iris isn’t afraid to speak her mind and takes inspiration from singers like Lizzo. Her music focuses on personal life experiences and lyrics promoting female empowerment.

Her driving force is being able to provide for her family through music.

Adding to her collection, Iris’ new single ‘My Body Is Mine’ dropped April 12.

Originally written as a personal mantra, My Body Is Mine explores Iris’ experiences in owning her own body.

Iris G is the freshest new vocalist to come out of Avondale, New Zealand.

4:00 The Mixtape: James Coyle

James Coyle aka Reverend Black Keys is an accomplished musician with a lot of credentials. He plays keys for The Nudge, Fly My Pretties and Newtown Rocksteady. As former Newtown Festival Programmer, he grew the small festival into the music/performance extravaganza it is today.

Currently, James performs in multiple bands, as well as working as Technical Services Manager for Massey Creative Media School. His musical influence is so far reaching that even his soccer team have released an album!

James joins Yadana Saw on The Mixtape to talk about life, and pick his favourite songs.
