New fishing rules for Marlborough Sounds announced

Blue cod taken in the Marlborough Sounds must be larger larger than 33 centimetres under new rules in force from December

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy announced in Picton this afternoon he was scrapping the old rules, which public feedback said were confusing and complicated.

He said the new rules were based on science.

During public consultation earlier this year locals said the current law - which meant blue cod had to be between 30 and 35 centimetres - caused the unnecessary death of a lot of fish.

The changes take effect from 20 December when the recreational fishing season opens.
