Police in the lower North Island are advising motorists about treacherous driving conditions due to the bad weather.
MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the area about the Tararua Range, with heavy rain forecast until mid-afternoon.
Inspector Dave White says there is rain, mist and extremely high winds about State Highway One, north of Levin.
He says gusts risk blowing trucks and other vehicles over the road, and asks motorists to be cautious.
