Councillor puts forward plan for New Brighton pier

A Christchurch city councillor has come up with a novel suggestion for accommodating fishers and sightseers on the New Brighton pier.

There have been calls for people fishing to be banned from the pier by those who feel they have taken over the popular landmark.

Concerns include the damage fishers are doing to the structure, and the blood and guts they leave behind.

Councillor David East said he had a win-win solution: a special lower deck for fishing at the end of the pier.

He has asked an engineering firm to draw up plans for the deck, and said it would make sense to build it at the same time as scheduled earthquake repairs were done on the pier.
