Retailers in the Sydney CBD say shoppers are out in force for Boxing Day sales.
Shoppers are tipped to spend $A1.9 billion on Boxing Day across the nation, a rise of 5.5% from 2012.
Australian Retail Association executive director Russell Zimmerman told AAP it was "all systems go" for shopaholics in central Sydney.
"It's showing some very positive signs, everyone's enjoying themselves," Mr Zimmerman said.
"I think the confidence is back. There's lots of people, but there's also lots of bags and that's obviously a positive sign."
AAP reports David Jones started its Boxing Day sale on Christmas Eve, offering online buyers first dibbs. Myer, Target and Country Road also offered Boxing Day deals early to online shoppers.
David Jones stores in Sydney's CBD opened at 5am (AEST).
Westfield Sydney manager Trevor Hill said hundreds were queued outside the centre's big department stores and luxury outlets when doors opened on Thursday.
He estimated about 400 people rushed into Myer at 5am and about 200 entered Gucci at 8am.
"The mood's very positive," Mr Hill added.
