Northlands Mall shops to close for building work

Fourteen retailers in Christchurch's Northlands Mall are likely to be shut out for a year while owners strengthen the building.

An engineering evaluation has found a section at the southern end of the mall needs to be closed for immediate strengthening to comply with new building regulations.

Kiwi Income Property Trust, which owns the building, says the closures are effective immediately, and repairs are likely to take a year.

Chief executive Chris Gudgeon says other parts of the mall will also need repair work but evaluations haven't been finished yet.

He says it is unlikely other shops will need to be closed.
