A group hoping to create a blueprint for Christchurch's new cathedral has looked to some of the world's most impressive churches for inspiration.

Demolition of the 130-year-old earthquake damaged cathedral has begun and the tower has already been taken down.

A group of building experts and clergy recently visited cathedrals in Europe and North America.

Acting Dean of ChristChurch Cathedral Lynda Patterson was part of the delegation and says she found inspiration for what a new cathedral should look like.

Reverend Patterson told Morning Report each the cathedral took a different approach to preserving history.

The group will present its findings in a range of public forums in the near future.
