Thousands of people have turned out to Saturday's Great Kiwi Beer Festival in Christchurch's Hagley Park.

The festival - the South Island's largest - emphasises educating people about how to drink beer in moderation.

A member of the Society of Beer Advocates, Geoff Griggs, says at any alcohol-based festival some people are likely to become intoxicated, but he hopes to encourage festival-goers to appreciate beer and, in particular, non-alcoholic beer.

The festival, now in its second year, showcases craft beer. It's hosting 40breweries from throughout the country.
