Ms Ardern has received widespread acclaim for the compassion she has shown to the victims and their families, and for the swift action her Government has taken to ban semi-automatic firearms.

One petition on the website change.org calling for Ms Ardern to be awarded the prestigious prize has as of this evening been signed by 16,600 people.

Another, on the French website avaaz.org, has so far been signed by 2800.

Should she be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize she would have to wait until the 2020 event, with nomination having already closed for this year.
