Cowley finishes 25th in heptathlon

The New Zealand heptathlete Sarah Cowley finished 25th at London's Olympic Stadium on Sunday morning.

The 28-year-old from Rotorua began the second day of the seven-event competition in 30th place out of 39.

She picked up three places in her first event of the day, the long jump, reaching 6.00 metres on her final jump. In the javelin, her best throw was 41.90 metres, a personal best.

Going into the final event, the 800 metres, Cowley was 29th overall. She turned in a competitive time of 2min 19.01s, which lifted her to 5873 points and 25th place.

The event was won comfortably by Great Britain's Jessica Ennis, who scored 6955 points.

The poster girl of the London Games dropped to the track and burst into tears of relief when she clinched victory in the 800 metres.

Russia's world champion Tatyana Chernova took silver and Lyudmyla Yosypenko of Ukraine the bronze.
