NZ 9th in javelin

New Zealand javelin thrower Stuart Farquhar finished ninth in the men's final at the Olympic Games on Friday.

Farquhar threw 80.22 metres in the final, which was over two metres short of what he threw in the qualifying stages.

Keshorn Walcott from Trinadad & Tobago won the gold medal with a throw of 84.58 metres.

Walcott, 19, is the youngest winner of an Olympic javelin title. He is also world junior champion.

Oleksandr Pyatnytsya of Ukraine won silver with a throw of 84.51m and Antti Ruuskanen of Finland took bronze with a throw of 84.12m.

Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway, who was seeking a third successive Olympic gold, was sixth.
