Treaty settlement seeks navy land swap

10:09 am on 3 April 2012

Auckland Council wants the Government to substitute another piece of land for part of the North Shore which is included in a Treaty of Waitangi settlement.

Many residents on the North Shore oppose the inclusion of more than three hectares of Navy land, which is earmarked for possible future inclusion in the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.

But the area is included in a settlement signed last year with Ngati Whatua, who will continue to lease it to the navy for up to 150 years.

Auckland Council supports the settlement, but will ask a Parliamentary select committee to offer another piece of Crown Land instead.

Two members of the Independent Maori Statutory Board, who sit on the Auckland Plan committee, opposed the council involvement.
