Report on sex offender teacher due

An official inquiry into how a convicted sex offender obtained work as a school teacher is expected to report to the Government on Monday.

Former Ombudsman Mel Smith has investigated how Terito Henry Miki used false identities to cheat the teacher registration system.

In April, Miki, 41, pleaded guilty to seven charges of using a document for pecuniary advantage and four charges of breaching a supervision order.

He used fake names and qualifications to get work in six schools even though he had been convicted of indecently assaulting a boy and was not allowed to work with children.

He is due to be sentenced on 18 May.

Miki was arrested in February this year, prompting the inquiry.

A second case of a sex offender working as a teacher was later added to the inquiry.

Radio New Zealand's education correspondent says the investigation is expected to identify specific points in the system that Miki exploited and suggest improvements to ensure it does not happen again.
