Only a third of tenants moved so far

Housing New Zealand has moved out just over a third of its tenants from a condemned housing complex in central Wellington.

Tenants at the Gordon Wilson complex were told they had a week to move, after an engineering report found the building's facades could come down in an earthquake or very high winds. That deadline expired on Friday.

The 1950s-era complex on The Terrace housed 131 people. Housing New Zealand hopes the building will be empty by next Wednesday.

So far, 30 of the 81 flats have been cleared out with most people going to other Housing New Zealand tenancies in Wellington.
