Dunedin police crackdown on unsafe vehicles

1:45 pm on 7 August 2012

Dunedin police say they have ordered more than a dozen unsafe vehicles off the road after a sting operation.

Police say 12 staff stopped about 80 vehicles during the operation last Friday night, issued 26 infringement notices and ordered 14 vehicles off the road.

Road policing manager Phil McDouall says in one case a van weighing three tonnes was pulling a trailer with another two tonnes on it that had a faulty braking system.

Senior Sergeant McDouall says other vehicles had bald tyres and could not have stopped safely at speed on a wet or icy road.
