Six New Zealand soldiers wounded by insurgents in Bamiyan province last Saturday, when two of their comrades were killed, are to be brought home as soon as possible.

Major John Gordon told Morning Report that one of the soldiers who has serious gunshot wounds to the abdomen, will be transferred to Bagram airbase for further assessment.

The other five are in hospital in Germany.

All six will be brought back to New Zealand.

Caskets containing the bodies of Lance Corporals Pralli Durrer and Rory Malone, both 26, arrived at Christchurch international airport late on Thursday night.

Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said the Defence Force is grateful for the help of the US Defence Department which allowed the two to be brought home as quickly as possible.

A commemorative service will be held at Burnham military camp on Saturday afternoon before the soldiers are returned to their families.
