Residents says walkway upgrade needed urgently

South Auckland residents say assaults will continue to occur regularly on a popular walkway unless major improvements are completed urgently.

Auckland Transport had planned to make the safety changes to the Windrush Close walkway in Mangere over the next year but has pushed that out four or five years.

The agency will not say why the improvements have been delayed but, like all its projects, the timeframe will be reviewed.

That answer does not satisfy Mangere residents who say they feel unsafe using the 200-metre walkway even during the day.

Many say they have been harassed, threatened or even mugged on the path.

Auckland Council is urging Auckland Transport to reconsider its decision.
