An American woman injured in a car crash near Waitomo Caves last month, in which her husband was killed, has been transferred from intensive care to a new high dependence unit at Waikato hospital.

Jim and Gerri Steinke say the condition of their daughter Kirsten has improved and she is beginning her recovery and gathering strength.

Ms Steinke, 28, and her husband Kallan Stithem, 31, from Denver, Colorado, were in New Zealand on their honeymoon when their car crashed near Waitomo Caves on 20 September.

Mr Stithem died in the collision.
