A Singaporean national has appeared in the Dunedin District Court, charged with dangerous driving causing death, following a fatal crash in South Otago on Tuesday.

Neville Westbrooke Squires, 82, of Riverton, died in the head-on crash on State Highway 1, near Kuriwao, Clinton, about 1.20pm.

Balclutha police say it appears the driver of a four-wheel-drive vehicle tried to overtake a northbound truck and crashed into the path of an oncoming, southbound car.

A police spokesperson says a 26-year-old Singaporean was remanded in custody to appear in court again on Thursday, and is likely to face further charges.

The spokesperson says the driver of the southbound car, in which Mr Squires was a front-seat passenger, remains in Dunedin Hospital, along with three passengers from the four-wheel-drive.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, including the driver of the truck overtaken in the incident.
