The Governor-General has accepted the role of inaugural patron of a charitable trust set up to provide support for the families of soldiers killed or injured on operations overseas.

The Fallen Heroes Trust was launched last month and aims to raise $10 million over the next three years.

In his first act as patron, Lieutenant-General Sir Jerry Mateparae introduced members of the families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan to the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall at a private function at Government House in Wellington on Thursday.
