A three-year-old boy has been removed from his home in Marton, where another three year old was found with head injuries and later died.

Cherish Tahuri-Wright was found at the home of her grandparents, in Marton near Wanganui, after police responded to a call on Tuesday.

Her life support was switched off on Wednesday night and she died about midnight at Wellington Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan says a three-year-old boy, who is a relative of the dead girl, has been moved to an address outside Marton.

The child, who was from Porirua, had been staying with her grandparents in Marton for several weeks.

Cherish was initially treated at the house before being moved to a nearby hospital. She was transferred to Palmerston North Hospital, then flown to Wellington.

Her injuries and death are the subject of a police investigation involving about 20 police officers and forensic scientists.
