The person who handed in a knife to a security guard following a fatal stabbing on Coromandel's Waihi Beach has come forward to the police.
Robert Wilkinson, known to his family as Murray, was stabbed outside his caravan on New Year's Day.
The 64-year-old died in hospital on Thursday.
Detective Inspector Chris Page says a member of the public handed in a knife to a security guard at the scene of the attack on Thursday, but no contact details were taken down.
He says the police did not know if the knife had anything to do with the stabbing, but appealed for the person to come forward to establish where and how it was found.
The person came forward overnight.
