Corrections computer disciplinary numbers up

4:24 pm on 10 January 2013

The number of Corrections Department employees disciplined for misusing computers at work more than doubled last year.

Eight employees fell foul of the department's computer rules the year before.

Nineteen Corrections employees were disciplined for unacceptable computer use in the year to 31 October, 2012, one of whom was dismissed.

Seventeen others received written warnings or cautions for viewing pornographic material at work.

The Department of Corrections of organisational development general manager Vince Arbuckle said more than 7000 frontline staff were given access to the internet for the first time in 2011.

He said some have had to learn the hard way that internet access comes with responsibility.

While the rate of computer misuse by Corrections staff is low, he said it should be zero.
