Christchurch council to close social housing units

3:04 pm on 29 January 2013

The Christchuch City Council is closing three earthquake-damaged social housing complexes in the city, forcing 31 residents to find homes elsewhere.

The council on Tuesday announced it is closing the 17 units in the Knightsbridge Lane complex in Aranui, seven units in the 13-unit Louisson Courts complex in Opawa and seven units in the 13-unit Avonheath Courts complex in Redcliffs.

The closures come after the council received the results of detailed engineering evaluation assessments showing that the buildings have a seismic capacity of less than 34% of the new building standard.

Community services general manager Michael Aitken says it is a distressing time for residents, but council staff will be working closely with them to identify alternative homes.
