Heavy rain on the way

The Nelson region is being warned of possible flooding as an intense storm is expected to bring high rainfall to the area.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning forecasting up to 300mm of rain in areas west of Motueka.

Rain is expected to begin on Saturday afternoon or evening, become heavier overnight and continue through Sunday and into Monday morning.

Nelson City Council spokesperson Angela Ricker says the council is working with Civil Defence and monitoring the weather closely.

She says the council is urging residents to clear any stormwater drains on their property to help prevent flooding.

Heavy rain warnings have also been issued for other parts of the country including Marlborough, Westland, Canterbury, North Otago, and Bay of Plenty.

Otago Regional Council is watching lake and river levels and advising farmers in North Otago to be ready to move stock to higher ground.
