Boy racers present submissions on crack down bill

10:08 pm on 17 July 2009

A select committee is in Christchurch hearing submissions on a Government bill seeking to crack down on boy racers.

The Land Transport (Enforcement Powers) Amendment Bill seeks to enhance police powers to tackle street racing by introducing harsh penalties to drivers who brake the rules.

Two boy racer representatives presented submissions outlining their concerns with the legislation.

Stuart MacIntosh said he believes the bill would not be effective in solving the problem.

He said the real issue is a social problem that's outside the boy racer community.

He said he has not been part of any criminal activity but is a car enthusiast and worries the bill would incriminate others in his position.

This is the first of several hearings on the bill.
