More on-the-spot penalties for minor crimes

More minor offences could be dealt with on the spot by officers under recommendations being prepared by police.

Police already give out instant speeding fines and spokesman Jon Neilson says they are considering whether more minor crimes could be handled that way.

Forces in other countries have cars equipped with mobile fingerprinting devices, and digital equipment for dictating statements instead of writing them.

Jon Neilson says the police are looking at the technology as they consider ways to make frontline staff more effective.

The police are working towards presenting recommendations to the government.
